トロントに半年間、バンクーバーに3ヶ月間住んでみて、けっこう違いを感じるというか、本当に同じ国なの⁉と思う時もあります。
Living in Toronto for six months and in Vancouver for three months, I often feel a significant difference, to the point where I wonder if they are really same country!?
その違いを紹介するにあたり、誰もが読めるように英語と日本語の記事にしてます。
そして読みやすいよう3つに絞ってまとめましたので是非！
When it comes to introducing these differences in a way that can be understood by people all over the world, the article is presented in both English and Japanese.
And to make it easier to read, I’ve narrowed it down to three, By all means!
街並み/Cityscape
まず感じたのが街並みの雰囲気の違い。
トロントは西洋風の建物や家が多くて「西の国」感が強く、歩いているだけで楽しかったなぁ。
One of the first things I notice was the difference in atmosphere of the city scape.
Toronto has a lot of “western style buildings and houses, which gives it a strong “Western country vibe”. Just walking around was enjoyable in itself.
レンガつくりの家とか建物を見ながら「洋画の中の世界だぁ」とずっと思ってた。
I was like “I’m in Western films” while I was watching houses and building made by brick.
特にトロント大学の敷地内はまるでハリーポッターの世界観
Especially within the campus of the University of Toronto, it feels like stepping into the world of Harry Potter.
もちろんダウンタウンのど真ん中に大きなビルやたくさんビルボードがあったりとカナダ1の都会なんですが、しっかりと古風の建物も残してあって共存しています。
Of course, Toronto is a bustling metropolis with towering skyscrapers and numerous billboards in the heart of downtown, truly representing largest city of Canada. But there are also old-fashioned buildings that coexist.
一方バンクーバーはどっちかというと発展しているアジアの国ってイメージ。
On the other hand, Vancouver is like developed Asian country.
アジア系の移民や留学生が多いからなのかな。
Perhaps it is because of the large number of Asian immigrants and international students.
ダウンタウンにはビルやマンションがありつつ、少し中心部から外れると山やビーチなどの自然も楽しめるような都市ですね。
While there are buildings and condominiums in the downtown, it’s a city where you can enjoy nature such as mountain and beach if you go to a little outside the downtown.
ダウンタウンで買い物してビーチで夕陽を見る。これがバンクーバーの醍醐味！
Shopping in downtown and watching the sunset at the beach, that’s kind of iconic in Vancouver!
トロントは「近未来と過去の融合」、バンクーバーは「都市と自然の融合」こんな印象かな。
Toronto gives the impression of a “fusion of the near future and the past”, while Vancouver embodies a “blend of the urban and natural elements”
公共交通機関/Public transport
これに関してはだいぶ違いがあります。正直びっくりです（笑）
There seems to be quite a difference in this regard. Honestly, it’s surprising lol
時間/Time
トロントに住んだことがある人は知ってると思います、トロントの電車のひどさを（笑）
Those who have lived in Toronto would likely know how terrible the trains in Toronto are lol
まず時間通りって概念がそもそもないので時刻表がありません。
There is no timetable because there is no concept of being on time.
そしてほぼ毎日と言っていいほど電車やバスが止まります。「もうこれOut of service だから！」と急に降ろされていつ来るかもわからない次の電車やバスをひたすら待つなんてことは日常です（笑）
And trains and buses stop almost every day. It’s common to be suddenly told, “This train/bus is now out of service!” and then patiently wait for the next train or bus, not knowing when it will arrive. It has become a part of daily life.
たまに休日は電車が動いていない時もあります。もう元から「今日は電車休みです！」みたいな（笑）
Occasionally, on weekend or holiday, trains are not running. It’s like “Today, trains are taking a day off”
なので電車やバスのトラブルに対する耐性はつきます。
Living in Toronto, You develop high tolerance for train and buss issues.
そういう事もあるよねって感じに（笑）
I was like ”Stuff happens”
反対にバンクーバーは時刻表がある！
On the contrary, Vancouver has a timetable!
電車に関しては日本みたいにあと何分で電車が来るかもわかるし、これまで途中でいきなり降ろされたこともないです。
As for train, I know how many minutes it will take to get there, like Japan.
なのでバンクーバーで初めて電車乗った時感動しました「電車がちゃんと動いてる！」って（笑）
When I took the train for the first time in Vancouver, I was like “Omg, the train is actually running smoothly”
同じ国とは思えない、、。
I can’t believe they are same country.
でもバスはバンクーバーも遅れることはよくあります。時刻表があるのに全くそれ通りに動いていない時とか（笑）
But buses are often late in Vancouver too. When there is a timetable but it doesn’t work at all lol
そこはやっぱりカナダだなって感じですね。
It’s Canada after all.
綺麗さ/Cleaness
簡潔に言うと、トロントは汚い駅が多くてバンクーバーは綺麗な駅が多いです（笑）
To be honest, Toronto has a lot of dirty stations, while Vancouver has a lot of clean stations.

あとこれはどっちにも共通してるんだけど、ほとんどの駅にトイレがない。
And this is common to both, there are no washrooms at the most of train station.
これはまじで大問題（笑）
This is big deal, for sure.
Signal/電波
トロントは電車が地下に入ると電波が無くなります。
In Toronto, when the train goes underground, the signal disappears.
そしてほとんどの時間が地下を走るので、電車に乗っている間はだいたい携帯使えないです。
And most of the time it runs underground, so you can’t use your cell phone while you’re on the train.
なので電車が止まって待ち合わせに遅れそうでも連絡できないという事故がよく起きました（笑）
So accidents often happened when the train stopped and I was running late for an appointment but wasn’t able to contact anyone lol
しかし、バンクーバーは地下でも電波が通っているので携帯が使える！
However, in Vancouver, you can use your mobile phone because the signal is available even underground!
スポーツ/Sports
3つ目はスポーツチームについて！
The third is about sports teams!
トロントは主に4つの有名なスポーツチームがあります。
Toronto has four major sports teams.
それは「Toronto Raptors/バスケ」「Toronto Maple Leafs/アイスホッケー」「Toronto FC/サッカー」「Toronto Blue Jays/野球」です。
These are
“Toronto Raptors/Basketball”
“Toronto Maple Leafs/Ice hockey”
“Toronto FC/Soccer
“Toronto Blue Jays/Baseball”
いずれのチームも各競技のトップリーグに所属しているので週末は何かしらの競技で盛り上がってます。
All the teams belong to the top league of their respective sports. So there is always excitement and fever around various sporting events on weekend.
その為、スポーツバーもたくさん:)
Therefore, there are many sports bars:)

スポーツ観戦が好きな人はトロントめちゃくちゃお勧めです！
If you enjoy watching sports, Toronto is highly recommended!
バンクーバーは有名なスポーツチームで言うと、「Vancouver Canuks/ Ice hockey」「Vancouver Whitecaps FC/ Soccer」くらいかな。
Speaking of famous sports teams in Vancouver, I would say “Vancouver Canuks/Ice hockey” and “Vancouver Whitecaps FC/Soccer”.
バンクーバーはスポーツ観戦が盛んって訳ではないですね。
Vancouver may not be famous for watching sports.
観戦よりもバレーやサッカーを自分たちがやるって人が多いのかなと思います。
I think there more people who prefer playing volleyball or soccer themselves rather than watching them.
以上のように、2つの都市に住むと様々な違いが見えてきておもしろいです。
As mentioned above, it’s interesting to see various differences when living in two city.
トロントとバンクーバーは日本で例えるなら、トロントが東京でバンクーバーは愛知（厳密にいうと名古屋）って感じかな（笑）
If Toronto and Vancouver were compared to Japan, I would say Toronto is Tokyo and Vancouver is Aichi (technically speaking, Nagoya)
長期留学で「1つの場所にずっといるのは、、」って人は2都市間留学も視野に入れてみるといいですよ。
For long term study abroad students who don’t want to stay in one place all the time, it’s good idea to consider studying abroad between two cities.
留学中にさらに環境を変えるのは大変なことも多いですが、その分価値があると思います。
Making further changes to your environment while studying abroad can be challenging in many ways, but I believe it’s worths the effort.
